Dear Frustrated Site and Forum Owner,

"...Websites That Facilitate Communication And Interaction Will Eventually Be Awarded By Sustainable High Traffic Volume...."

Ryan,

What a wonderful book you have written!

I have never met such an experienced community manipulator like you. In the Web 2.0 era, forums are too important for website traffic.

If traffic is the oxygen of your online business, then forums is the blood which carries your oxygen.

Only websites which facilitate communication and interaction will eventually be awarded by sustainable high traffic volume. (Don’t forget that the Internet was created to enhance communication.)

Forum Secrets Revealed is the best course teaching the webmasters how to effectively and manage a community site while 95% of the webmasters in the market are doing this dead wrong!

It covers very detailed explanations in all aspects from theory to practical solutions. More importantly, you have even laid out a simple step-by-step demonstration so that even my grandma can also master the skills.

"...I Am Extremely Impressed. It Really Does Cover Everything About Community Management..."

"...I must say - I am extremely impressed. It really does cover everything about community management...I would have paid top dollar for such a book when I was first starting out.

I especially liked how you integrated both the technical and administrative aspects of the management as I don't believe many people truly realize how interconnected they are.

Certain tools and tiny alterations in technical configuration can make a huge difference in the culture of any sized community, and I think that you really managed to show that.

Great job, you have a lot to be proud of here!

"...Highlights The Secrets That We Implemented To Bring Us To An Alexa Ranking of 8,488 In December 2006..."

Forget Web 2.0. Forget the hype about all you've heard about community traffic. If you fail to understand the basic psychological principles of forum and community building, you are literally committing online suicide.

The grand daddy of community is the bulletin board, and forums are still extremely viable as a source of loyalty and traffic. To understand it at its most basic level is to know how to run any kind of community site.

Ryan Chua is THE expert at forum and community building. He masterfully weaves the technical elements with the strategic elements to explode organic traffic growth on your current website.

I've worked with him on several forum based projects and I can say that I learnt a great deal about the power of community through his insights, including ways to get people participating on forums in order to generate a greater spirit of community.

My site, InternetMarketingSingapore.com, went from 60+ members to the current 2,168 members as at May 2007. It has been a brilliant contribution, and definitely the book that highlights the secrets that we implemented to bring us to an Alexa Ranking of 8,488 in December 2006 and one of the top 100 websites in Singapore during that time.

This book is a brilliant read - especially if you want to get ahead in business on the internet. Forums, as studied by Ryan, can be one of your secret weapons when seeking marketplace credibility and branding.

If you want to ignore this treasure trove of information, you'll lose out big time on the value of the community and the hundreds of thousands of dollars you are leaving on the table... while other readers are going to use forums to grow their websites rapidly, tap on long tail traffic, and outrun YOU far faster than you can BLINK.

You've put together a comprehensive resource for new and established forum owners. I like how you go into detail about the operational and technical issues of installing a forum!

The sections on managing the relationships within the forum is something vital that I have not seen in similar products.

But unfortunately, literally thousands of web site owners around the world still do this unwillingly and painfully everyday. Why?

The reasons are many but the biggest one is this... They simply don't know how to leverage on their own existing visitors. And 99% of all gurus support the belief that...

"Content Is King!"
But The Burning Question Is....
Are You Serving It Like A Small Pawn?

As you would have already known that the biggest drawing "bait" factor of returning visitors is fresh and updated content. Content has always been and continues to be the burning fuel that drives people back to your websites to return and to soak in new information.

The major problem with quality content...is that it's DIFFICULT and just a pure pain in the neck to create.

On top of that you would have to be consistent in posting updates, news and images(editing included) just to keep your stream of visitors on and returning.

What goes into each news content is research, thought, some time writing and editing your post or entry. Unless you're naturally gifted at writing and posting out good quality content, it would take you anywhere from 15 minutes to half an hour to churn out a quality article!

I started out just like that about 5 years ago, way before forums really got mainstream in the Internet. I had a website all about cars and I spent a good time each day hunting down images, and searching for their information and then posting some copy which took me about half an hour to write each time.

This was just for a 500 word article which is laughable in today's standards.

We All Start Out With A Big Idea..

And like most people, I started out alone...but very enthusiastically, with big dreams and hopes of creating a website I could be truely be proud of, and then hopefully earn some form of income on it (I didn't know how much I could have potentially earned back then).

Though I really loved what I was doing, a lot of hard work went into just updating the site and doing all of the research by myself. It was getting very exhaustive after a few months, and it came to no surprise that my passion and energy in my site started to wither and spiral downwards.

My site's front page literally turned into a ghost town in a matter of two short weeks.

My Optimistic Soaring Enthusiam
Came Crashing Down HARD.. Leading To My Completely Devastating Burnout...

Little did I know that I was mentally burning out from just posting persistently, trading links with other websites and hoping for more visitors. It was like I was spinning all 4 wheels on the ground and getting nowhere fast.

I was getting tired and frustrated, wishing that I didn't spent so much time on the site at all. It didn't matter whether i posted day after day, or whether i posted in a week.

Being completely frustrated, I just decided to let it lie dormant and focus on other websites in different niches which had been playing in my head.

And I believed at that time, that was pretty much the end to my sorry days of posting updates on my "passion".

Then One Email Changed Everything.

Now... I don't exactly remember the exact words that was in it but it was from a visitor who mentioned that he was a regular visitor...

"Hey Ryan...what's up with your updates? I keep looking forward to your news but they seem to be lesser and lesser.

Are you busy with school or something? Why don't you start a forum so we can talk? I'm sure there are other visitors on the site..."

I certainly didn't think about implementing one at the time as I didn't know jack about a forum or how to even set one up! Just purely out of curiosity, I started out with phpBB, a free discussion forum software which didn't cost a nickel. By the end of the day, I had a grand total of 7 signups and 20 new threads (new forum entries) that wasn't created by me!

At the time, the site was still not being updated by me, however the discussions were picking up from regular visitors to my site, and new members were joining in the forum without my intervention.

My web traffic started to increase steadily, and then it clicked (actually it was more like a bomb going off) in my head, that a discussion forum could truly power a website almost entirely by itself! (and I felt like giving myself a big slap to the head that I didn't implement it earlier)

I started to search the Internet for every available source for help in order to help me increase my member registration, community management, as well as tips and strategies on modifying my forum to suit my market.

I visited over 15 webmaster forums, read over literally thousands of forum threads and participated in many of them as well. Unfortunately I didn't find a single, reliable resouce that consolidated them into an easy to digest, "follow-and-implement" format.

There were two main problems which I encountered...

MAIN PROBLEM #1 - SMOKE BLOWERS- Many people in the webmaster forums were giving out generic how-to half-baked solutions on how to run successful forums when they didn't even have forums themselves. It was just like someone who never had kids telling a parent on how to raise a child the right way, or someone trying to teach you how to ride a bike, when they couldn't do it themselves.

Right...

MAIN PROBLEM #2 - TIME WASTED- Useful and genuine information were scattered in the million of forum threads in the webmaster forums. While most forums focused on the topic discussions, I had to go over tonnes of banter and off-topic diversions while trying to lock onto the really good stuff.

It was honestly like sifting through a field of 6 foot hay on one leg while trying to get to the farmer's barn. It was an awful waste of time.

During the first 36 months of struggling, I implement and test so-called "strategies" which were complete utter disasters...but in the process discovered some few golden strategies(amidst millions of dud ones) which worked like a dream!

It was only a year and a half later that I started to compile the information down for my own personal reference.

So Why Am I Qualified To
Tell You All About Discussion Forums?

I have been making my living on the Internet since since 2001. I run other online businesses in the areas of e-commerce and content publishing, and have 6 mature websites which generate me a very happy income online.

Since then I have also successfully helped grown my own friends forums in various niches.

But before I get your hopes up, I would like to warn you that this letter is not about "How To Get Rich Quick" or promising you immediate and guaranteed success... nothing of the sort.

I had started other forums in niches which I was confident about, that crashed and burned faster than you could say "Entschuldigen!". Forums do take real time and real effort to keep going and growing until a point where it doesn't require you to actively look after it.

I have been on both sides of the fence and I can relate in full honesty that it is downright demoralising to be the owner of a dead forum. It certainly wasn't a walk in the park like how I envisioned it was in the beginning.

You see, I 'm a big fan of cars especially towards BMWs (okay you may like other brands but just stick with me), and back then I didn't even have the license to drive one or come close to owning one, however I decided to start a forum based on the brand just because I was interested in a particular model.

Starting with less than 7 members back then (who were all close friends and still are my closest buddies today), my BMW forum has grown and developed into a huge forum community consisting of over several thousand members who return to visit and contribute on a very regular and daily basis.

I would say that the best part of all is that most of the new members I have met online, have worked out to be great business associates and close friends offline.

Over the recent years, I 've built up traffic and reputation to my BMW enthusiasts' website and currently, my primary forum is currently the largest advertised-on forum in the country alone!

And no..I am not talking about even the most "highly-recommended-by-most-gurus" Google Adsense. Although I do earn some pretty consistent earnings from it as well. Below is just a sample screenshot of my earnings.

Clicks and CTR Figures are blacked out due to Google Adsense policies.

My forum has generated thousands of dollars in residual revenue through over 20 different direct advertisers and services, which includes Global and Multi-National companies including an well renown international credit card company, with a member list of just under 10,000 members!

Many of my current sponsors don't even have a web site or are even educated much about the Internet, but still pay thousands of dollars directly to my bank account each and every month.

Zoe Toh

It goes to show how much emphasis and attention are being placed on community-driven target niche portals as the social scene heats up to unheard-of levels!

So far I have been very lucky in my online endeavours and today I play advisory roles to other forum administrators who have sought out my experience and I also co-administer 4 other extremely busy forums in various differing niches without taking even more than 45 minutes of my day.

Back to the topic of having your own forum...is that if you haven't already known...

Implementing An Optimized Forum Backend Is
Akin To Legally Pumping Up Your Website
With Unstoppable Content-Rich Steriods

The plain undeniable fact is..

Forums are clinically engineered to be extremely efficient and powerful social systems.

They are set in place to leverage your existing web traffic, and to allow each and every of your unique visitor to have the complete power to create new content and interact with other visitors on your site, without you even asking them for it.

This action alone empowers you with an unfair advantage over other site owners who rely heavily on themselves to provide content on their "static" websites. (and I sincerely hope that's not what you intend to do for the next few years.)

An added benefit is that it allows registered members to create and personalize their own profiles, allowing them to develop a closer relationship to your community with their own unique avatars and creative signatures!

Can I Take You Aside For Some Blunt Talk?

Honestly... can you post more than 3 times a day consistently? How about 5 times a week? It's tough as nails and hiring a full time writer doesn't come cheap. Trading your own time to struggle through the research and creation of an article to be posted will cost you even more if you don't know what you're doing.

Another reason why forums are so popular among huge sites is because they run like perfectly like well-oiled automated systems, sorting, updating and notifying each of your members on the different changes on fresh, unique content that take place each and every hour, of each and every day without fail or compromise.

This is because when members post a new thread or reply, other visitors can read and comment on it immediately, kicking off an unstoppable "new thread-reply-reply-reply-reply..." snowball effect which fortunately, just doesn't stop even if you wanted it to!
And what happens in the next second is that another member will start a NEW thread..and the cycle keeps going...

Another plus point is that gaining an reputation via your own forum is one of the quickest way to ensure that your website rises quickly above the rest to be recognized as an authority site in its field.

Visitors will flock in the thousands to a site which generates the fastest and and most relevant information such as detailed solutions and answers... even if its content is NOT created by you! I'll explain this more in detail later...

The cold hard truth is that you wouldn't visit a site or blog if it wasn't updated regularly. It's just common sense! Unfortunately most webmasters think they can do it all by themselves.

People Depend More On Forums
More Than Anything Else
On The Internet...

People (like you and I) are constantly searching the Internet for information and solutions on how to solve specific problems that they face, and the majority of solutions are always found on a forum where one or more people have already resolved through a discussion thread consisting of postings.

As an example, do you remember the last time you had a technical problem with your Windows software and queried the search engines with a particular error message?

Chances are that the search engines directed you to a discussion forum with a solution posted by a few members!

Being a well established authority forum certainly has it's perks as being the immediate go-to place to find a solution to a particular problem.

Can you imagine what you could achieve even with just 1/10th or even just 1/25th of their traffic? Or just picture the undying loyalty of having just 500 members on your forum returning each and every day, contributing page after page after page of information, detailed solutions for every problem and reviews for each and every minute?

The collective input of just 100, 50, 30, 5 active contributors and posters will outshine even the most prolific and active blogger.

The Easiest and Most Severely Unrated
Search Engine Optimization Tool Ever...

If you still don't believe that a forum can make a big difference to where your website stands today in the search engines... take a look at a screen capture of my latest Google Analytics "Keywords Screenshot". This is a period of 1 month in May 2007 till June 2007.

Search Engine Traffic

My forum had 15,866 keywords which pulled free traffic from the search engines this month without even me even having to spending a SINGLE DIME on advertising.. Now most SEO experts will tell you optimize for 30 - 100 keywords if possible on your new content site. But can you even optimize more than 50 pages with 500 keywords which get searched on within a month?

How about 1000 keywords? Or 5000 keywords?

The most incredible thing is...I didn't lift a finger to create those keywords.

My forum members DID all the work for me! The best part...they are continuing to do that for me each and every day. With every thread and post they create, my site's "size" grows organically day in...day out (over 40-50 new pages added each day), and without any "black-hat" tricks involved. The larger forums I work with are adding over 100 new pages on an hourly basis.

I'm no SEO "Expert" or "Guru" either nor am I using some spammy software script... the absolute truth is.. I'm just your average Internet joe.

But tell any SEO "Expert" or "Guru" today that you want to optimize your Website today for just 10,000 keywords which are searched on, with a minimal time and budget ... and chances are that they'll fall off their chairs in complete disbelief at what you're asking for!

The truth and fact is in the pudding. Google, MSN and Yahoo! search engines loves my site's organic growth and absolutely unique user-generated keyword-related content, and they (the big search giants) continue to send traffic to me each and every day as a small reward. Today i have over 250,000 pages indexed in Google and Yahoo.

Just try achieving that with your blog!

But If You Already Have A Blog... The Initial Struggle Already Has Been Half Won And Winning It In Your Likely Favour!

If you are already running an active blog with repeat visitors, it is to your immediate advantage that implementing a forum could bring your site to another level of traffic that you have not experienced before.

The issue with blogs that I personally don't like is that the posts that you write, which generate "topical" comments, severly restricts the conversation that your visitors would LOVE to have with you and with one another!

Isn't it true that your repeat and regular blog visitors are users who are attracted to your content, and very likely to have the same or extremely similiar interests with other readers?

That's why sometimes you see different comments being left by visitors being directed to another as "quoting" in popular blog posts.

If you have already seen that... That's a clear sign to you to start a forum on your site already!

Exceptional bloggers such as Steve Pavlina, the world's leading personal development blogger, runs a forum on their own backend to enhance discussions with his readers on each blog posts he creates. His readers pours in their thoughts, comments and other suggestions and he has a deeper understanding on what they want and how he can write a new post each time to cater to their needs.

His blog readers start meaningful discussions with each other, assist one another, share experiences and bond together to form an even closer relationship on his forums! Over time, his blog visitors become forum regulars, who become friends, into valued content contributors, who in turn drive even more blog AND forum visitors, and attract search engine crawlers with unique, fresh content!

How's that for an truely organic community which grows without ever slowing down? And that's the biggest secrets that form the basis of a truely self-sustaining website.

The ideas are probably already popping into your head on the limitless potential you could do for your own site. But...I want to be open and upfront about it before you think it's just a matter of installing another software script.

In fact is you could download a free forum script RIGHT NOW and immediately set up your own forum this very instant!

But unfortunately, the harsh and painful reality is...

Starting A Forum Can Be A
Long Painful Crutch In Your Back...

If You Didn't Know How To Manage It RIGHT With Ruthless Efficiency.

There is not a shadow of a doubt that a forum is one of the best ways to ensure returning web traffic, and many experienced site owners already know that implementing one as part of their web generation and traffic retainment strategy is absolutely crucial and essential to their site's survival.

"...Much Valued Information (Practical, Usable, Doable And Very Realistic)..."

Hey Ryan

I am totally impressed with Forum Secrets Revealed!! I’m not a techie, but your structured and well-organised way of presenting all your information really made it so easy for me to not just understand, but also to digest and make sense of.

Talk about information. I guess FSR has provided so much valued information (practical, usable, doable and very realistic) that I can’t think of any questions and doubts I have in my head regarding forums that weren’t answered!

I love that generous use of graphics, especially on parts where you are going more technical.

Guess what? I actually got hooked from the first page on!

Now, I’m not just motivated to start a forum myself, I know it’s totally possible that I can do it by myself.

I won’t hesitate to recommend this fabulous resource to anyone who is seriously considering having a forum. And if they aren’t, they will once they’ve gotten hold of this. Just like me. What a gem!

Cheers!

P.S The interviews with those experts are so interesting and full of real-life scenarios that could happen. Very thoughtful of you to hunt these people down and let us hear them!

Just look at any popular authority website today and you'll most likely find that in 8 out of 10 of them, a discussion forum resides as part of their core community strategy.

The painful part is that the majority of new forums never lift off the ground is because the administrator simply doesn't know how to properly pilot a social jet fighter.

We all know how fast a F-16 jet fighter plane can fly, and how lethal it can be to it's enemies... but can you jump right into a fighter jet cockpit right this minute, start its engines and even take it off the ground?

The very same idea applies to a forum! Whenever someone wants to establish or start their own forum, they get bombarded and bogged down instanteneously by a monstrous list of "problem missiles" such as:

  • What sort of server should I use?

  • What kind of forum software should I use?

  • How do I get people to even register?

  • How do get them to start posting?

  • How do I encourage interactivity between my members?

  • How do I drive traffic to my forums?

  • Should I implement rules or guidelines?

  • How do I manage moderators?

  • What do I do with moderators that rebel?

  • How do I make money with my forums to cover my expenses?

  • How should I keep the momentum going?

  • How do I protect my forum from malicious hackers?

  • What do I do with trolls and rule skirters who surface?

  • What should I do about valued, contributing members who fight with one another? (or even to newbies who come in!?

  • And much, much more...

It's no wonder people throw their hands up, scream bloody murder and give up so quickly. After all, it's much easier to force yourself to post your own unique content daily IF you didn't know how to run and manage a forum properly and effectively!

At this point you may be asking...

"So...What Other Ways Can
I Use To Sustain My Web Traffic?"

If you are still not convinced that a forum can radically transform your static website into an energetic community, you may have already put your valuable time, sweat and money into the following techniques...

Article / Content Publishing

Daily Blog Postings

Building Reciprocal Links

Paying for private label content

Search Engine Optimization

Directory Submissions

Link exchanges

Expensive Pay Per Click Campaigns

And much, much more...

Yes I feel your pain. You've gone nearly through the full 8 miles with as much trouble and frustration as it is, and I am not going to confuse you with any technical php-asp-geek facts or SEO-boggling advice that even make the most professional search experts pull out the hairs on their head.

You may have even attempted to follow "The Gurus" advice on strategies of re-writing scraped content or using free (but duplicated) articles on your sites in an attempt to get the search giants to notice your hard work and best efforts, or have purchased "Out-Of-The-Box" businesses which are "turn-key" solutions to earn you XX, XXX money online.

Some of them may even offer to sell you automated blogging software which serves to do nothing but junk the Search Engines with meaningless material.

The brutal fact that the search engines WILL penalize your site severely for having such duplicate content and using black-hat strategies. Thousands of such black-hat sites have already suffered the death blow by Google since June 2007 for flouting their internal Quality score for spammy like sites.

Sorry, but I personally dislike and will never teach others to depend on black-hat short term tricks in return for long term returns.

"...Concise Information On How To Effectively Manage a Forum..."

Hey Ryan,

When I finally received a copy of your Forum Secrets, I realized that it was worth the wait! It’s really has very concise information on how to effectively manage a forum. I, being a design klutz, am very poor with the design elements.

Your design tips, not only shown me how to have a simple yet appealing website, but more importantly shown me how to use graphics to drive the most value for my readers.

Of course, they are so many gems of information in your product that it would take me 10,000 words just to finish my evaluation. Thanks for creating such a fantastic product!

Online Social Interactions Equate To An Unstoppable Traffic Stablizer

Active social interactions can put an immediate end to the wild and unpredictable rollercoaster ride of your web traffic. It is absolutely pointless to do burst of article contributions, link building, on-page optimization and other short term techniques which attract a rise in traffic... which is only temporary!

It's a terrible feeling I know. But unless you do the above consistently for a longer period of time (between 4-6months) you will find that the journey is going to be a long and painful one.

I've been there and done that more than twice, and I vowed to NEVER do it again.

Not many site owners know this thoroughly, but a well structured forum on your site's backend is a great but sneaky way to entice your visitors and keep them there. Yes... KEEP THEM THERE! It's very much like luring them into a cool and cozy lounge and keeping them entertained for hours...

The best part is that they'll thank YOU for it.

"...Amazed By The Amount of High-Quality Information You Have Inside..."

Hi Ryan,

I've just had a look at Forum Secrets Revealed, and to tell you the truth I'm amazed by the amount of high-quality information you have inside your ebook of yours.

Building a forum had always been my personal weak spot, and I discovered the hard way and I discovered that it's hell of a lot harder than it seems.

In fact there are tons of dead forums out there and I don't want my forums to be one of them.

As of today I already have 2 forums, one using VBulletin and another private forum using SMF. I'm really looking forward to implementing some of the techniques you've mentioned in your ebook, and your list of resources and tips for each individual forum system and are simply mind-boggling!

Thank you so much for this wonderful product!

The result after implementing a discussion forum? Passing and browsing visitors were now staying, registering with their contact information , posting, returning and interacting with each other... unconsciously being addicted and emotionally attached to their own forum experience. It is and continues to be one of the most easiest traffic bait ever.

Having a forum working tirelessly on your "backend" also allows you to effectively...

Harness And Implement
The Pulling Power Of U.G.C
...

It comes as no surprise that the highest trafficked sites of the world today are powered by this very interesting term, U.G.C - User Generated Content.

Wikipedia.com explains it as:

"...User-Generated Content is a term that has come into the mainstream during 2005 in web publishing and new media content production circles. It refers to on-line content that is produced by users of websites as opposed to traditional media producers such as broadcasters and production companies....

...marks a shift among media organisations from creating on-line content to creating the facilities and framework for non-media professionals (i.e. 'ordinary people') to publish their own content in prominent places.... "

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would have already heard of these sites...

  1. MySpace

  2. Flickr

  3. YouTube

  4. Wikipedia

  5. Facebook

All of the sites above does several things differently (from sharing videos to images), however the biggest similiarities among them is that they come equipped with an efficient architecture to easily allow their visitors to easily contribute content and interact with each other.

Such sites has been termed "Web 2.0" sites and have been the hottest buzz for the recent years.

The biggest issues and problem is that creating systems such as the ones above can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars in careful market research, software development, testing and human resources!
